What is my role in organizing this IB Spanish trip?
Teachers announce the trip at school, usually some time in advance. The trip may be a school sponsored trip, or a trip taken by the teacher outside of the school system. Teachers encourage students to consider the trip, and spread interest. They will normally hold an informational meeting with parents and students, to inform them about details. A Centro MundoLengua director can be on-site for the meeting, or available by Skype/phone. In terms of payments, this can be done online by each individual student (so teachers do not have to handle any money).
What exactly are my responsibilities as a chaperone during the trip?
Accompanying professors normally come to school each day, in order to check-in with their students. Some come at the beginning of class, while others choose to come during the break, or even after classes have ended. Chaperones normally accompany the students and Centro MundoLengua guides during cultural visits, as well as any excursions. In the event that a student becomes ill, Centro MundoLengua will always accompany him/her to the doctor. The accompanying professor will normally come along, for added support. In general, in case of any type of issue with students, Centro MundoLengua relies on the added advice and support of chaperones before taking action.
Will I have to pay anything?
Normally, teachers travel for free. MundoLengua offers housing in a Spanish host family with full board. Accompanying teachers do not have to pay anything to participate in the included activities and excursions for the students.
Will I have free time?
Absolutely. Given that our program is highly structured, you will find that you have a lot of free time to pursue outside interests, or to simply relax. Each group is assigned their own Centro MundoLengua coordinator who takes care of them. As well, there is always a program director on-site for added support. Some teachers use the time to study, research, get in shape, shop, lay out on the beach, catch up on summer reading, etc.
Do I need to buy flights for my group?
You are responsible for purchasing your own flights. It is very important to make sure all students have passports and secure your flights early. Southern Spain is one of the most popular destinations worldwide. The longer you wait, the more you are going to pay for flights. That being said, we can help. We work with an agent that can book flights for groups of at least 10 individuals total (for airlines, a group needs to be at least 10). If you have less than 10 in your group, you can either ask a local travel agent, or simply book flights online. We will pick you up at the arrival airport in Spain. For Seville, you should look for flights into Seville airport. It is possible to arrange pick-up in Jerez de la Frontera or Malaga airports, but there will be a surcharge. As well, it is possible to fly into Madrid and take the high-speed train down to Seville. Ask us for more details.
How do you determine the Spanish level of my students?
Our high school academic coordinator will collaborate with you to determine your group’s overall level and needs. Before arrival, you students will take an online placement exam. This will help us determine their level. In addition, they will supply us with the number of years of high school Spanish that they have completed.
What are the classes like for my students?
Above all else, they are interactive and communicative. Students develop a close relationship with both their teacher, as well as new friends in the class. Class sizes tend to be around 12 students (with a maximum of 15). Students have the opportunity to practice their Spanish by speaking a lot. They will study language and culture at the same time, investigating culture will serve as a means to learn Spanish language.
What are some examples of the activities?
Do your students know how to dance salsa? How about flamenco? Do they like sports (kayaking on the river, boating and biking in the park)? Or are they more history buffs? How about a visit around the ancient city center, discovering its’ hidden gems? In addition to the afternoon activities, your students will be able to meet other Centro MundoLengua participants during our evening programs. This includes tapas nights, group dinners, musical concerts, movie nights, school dances, and special events.
What will my students do on the weekend?
This depends on the size of your group and when the students study with Centro Mundolengua. We can work with you to personalize excursions, or your students can paraticipate with other Centro Mundolengua student groups that are studying during the same dates. There are many possibilities, including Gibraltar, Vejer de la Fontera, the beach of Bolonia, Tarifa, Córdoba, Granada, Morocco, etc.
What are the families like?
If you want your students to be immersed in the culture and language: This is the best way! Host families have worked with us for many years, and are all carefully chosen and visited by our housing director. Most families live in middle-class apartments, with the usual comforts of life. Students will most likely share a room with a friend, or other student from the program. They will also most likely share a bathroom. Families make all of the meals for students, so this is an excellent opportunity to try many new home-cooked Spanish foods. We can also deal with special diets, but we need to know this in advance. Families also wash any clothes for students. Some families have children, whereas others don’t. Some have pets, and others no. Families come in all shapes and sizes. Our housing director is onsite every day, willing to help students with even the smallest of issues. Students develop close bonds with their families, and really love this aspect of the program. They also have the opportunity to practice their Spanish in a real-life setting, outside of the classroom.
How much free time will my students have?
One thing that students love is that this program combines the best of both worlds. They have the daily structure of their classes and activities, which also allows them to meet new friends, with some free time thrown in. Some students are more independent than others, and relish this time to explore the city, make friends with the locals, enjoy sports, shopping, etc. For younger students there will be a program of optional activities in which they can participate. See the “A Typical Day”section for more ideas, but rest assured that they will have some free time every day for themselves.
Will my students meet other international and Spanish students?
Absolutely! Our summer programs usually have a mix of American, Canadian, and European students in any given session. Additionally, we have exchanges with local Spanish high schools. This means that students will meet Spanish students during language and sports exchanges. For programs that do not take place in the summer, it will depend, yet they will still be able to take advantage of our exchanges with local Spanish high schools.
How much supervision will my students have?
All students count on 24 hour / 7 day a week supervision from our multi-lingual staff. Their safety is our top priority. As such, all students will be required to carry a Centro MundoLengua ID card with emergency phone contacts. Their families will also have this information. They will be able to rely on an extensive network of directors, teachers, and coordinators to facilitate their stay in Seville. We also will be checking in with students on a daily basis, during the classes and activities to insure they are comfortable.
