Do I need to buy flights?
You are responsible for purchasing your own flights. It is very important to apply for a passport and secure your flights early. Southern Spain is one of the most popular destinations worldwide. The longer you wait, the more you are going to pay for flights. The process is quite simple and nowadays can be done online. Don’t worry about travelling “alone”. There will inevitably be other Centro MundoLengua students on your flight, and we will connect you with them in advance. As well, we will pick you up at the arrival airport in Spain. For Seville, you should look for flights into Seville airport. It is possible to arrange pick-up in Jerez de la Frontera or Malaga airports, but there will be a surcharge. As well, it is possible to fly into Madrid and take the high-speed train down to Seville. Ask us for more details.
How do you determine my Spanish level?
Before arrival, you will take our online placement exam. This will help us determine your level. In addition, you will supply us with the number of years of high school Spanish that you have completed. In any case, this course is intended for students who will be going into AP® the following year at school, or in some cases who have already completed AP® by the time of this course.
What are the classes like?
Above all else, they are interactive and communicative. You will develop a close relationship with both your teacher, as well as new friends in the class. Class sizes tend to be around 12 students (with a maximum of 15). You will have the opportunity to actually practice your Spanish by speaking a lot. You will study the language and culture at the same time. We will cover the main themes of the AP® course, as you practice integrating skill sets in writing, reading, speaking, and listening. You will gain a definite advantage relative to your peers who have not completed this course, with a solid foundation for the coming year. Classes are not intended to give homework and exams. You will be completing the majority (if not all) of your work in class.
What are some examples of the activities?
Do you know how to salsa dance? How about flamenco? Do you like sports (kayak on the river, boats and bikes in the park)? Or are you more of a history buff? How about a visit around the ancient city center, discovering its’ hidden gems (Cathedral of Seville, Royal Palace, old Jewish quarter, etc.)? In addition to the afternoon activities, you will be able to meet other students during our nighttime program. This includes tapas nights, group dinners, musical concerts, movie nights, school dances, and special events.
What will I do on the weekend?
During your time abroad you will have the chance to travel on both Saturday and Sunday. We take day trips (leaving in the morning and returning in the early evening). You will spend one day visiting the coastal city of Cadiz, with its’ endless white sand beaches. We will tour the city center and visit the Tavira Tower. The rest of the day will be spent at the beach. You will also visit the coastal city of Tavira, in southern Portugal. This will be a day spent relaxing at the incredible beaches, playing sports with your new friends and enjoying the sun.
What is living with a family like?
You wanted to be immersed in the culture and language. This is the best manner! Host families have worked with us for many years, and are all carefully chosen and visited by our housing director. Most families live in middle-class apartments, with the usual comforts of life. You will most likely share a room with a friend, or other student from the program. You will also most likely share a bathroom. Your family will make all of your meals for you, so this is an excellent opportunity to try many new home-cooked Spanish foods. We can also deal with special diets, but we need to know this in advance. Your family will also wash any clothes for you. Some families have children your age, whereas others don’t. Some have pets, and others no. Families come in all shapes and sizes. Our housing director is onsite every day, willing to help you with even the smallest of issues. Students develop close bonds with their families, and really love this aspect of the program. They also have the opportunity to practice their Spanish in a real-life setting, outside of the classroom.
How much free time will I have?
One thing that students love is that this program combines the best of both worlds. You have the daily structure of your classes and activities, which also allows you to meet new friends, with some free time thrown in. Some students are more independent than others, and relish this time to explore the city, make friends with the locals, enjoy sports, shopping, etc. See a typical day in this section, but rest assured that you will have some free time every day for yourself.
Will I have the chance to meet other international and Spanish students?
Absolutely! Although our Seville program tends to have mostly American students from all over, we do have exchanges with local Spanish high schools. This means that you will meet Spanish students during language and sports exchanges. You will also be able to connect with friends after the program has ended, as you follow our social network pages.
How much supervision will I have?
All students count on 24 hour / 7 day a week supervision from our multi-lingual staff. Your safety is our top priority. As such, all students will be required to carry a Centro MundoLengua ID card with emergency phone contacts. Your families will also have this information. You will be able to rely on an extensive network of directors, teachers, and coordinators to facilitate your stay in Seville. We also will be checking in with you on a daily basis, during the classes and activities.
