INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
Is this course for my students?
This course is designed to prepare prospective students to excel in the AP® Spanish Language course, as well as on the examination. The course is principally for students who will be taking AP® the following year in their home schools. As well, the course serves as solid preparation in advanced language and culture for students who have already taken the AP course.
For students who are not doing AP® prep Spanish Language, we do offer additional courses: Spanish Language and Culture (all levels).
Where?
Students have the opportunity to take this course in Madrid, the capital of Spain, with its variety of culture and entertainment. They will discover a vibrant metropolis with much to see and experience: its famous museums (Museo del Prado, Reina Sofía, etc.), its rich artistic and historical heritage (Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Palacio Real, etc.), its traditions, wide variety of cuisine, and also a paradise for lovers of shopping.

Teachers announce the trip at school, usually some time in advance. The trip may be a school sponsored trip, or a trip taken by the teacher outside of the school system. Teachers encourage students to consider the trip, and spread interest. They will normally hold an informational meeting with parents and students, to inform them about details. A Centro MundoLengua director can be on-site for the meeting, or available by Skype/phone. In terms of payments, this can be done online by each individual student (so teachers do not have to handle any money).
What exactly are my responsibilities as a chaperone during the trip?
Chaperones normally come to school each day, in order to check-in with their students. Some come at the beginning of class, while others choose to come during the break, or even after classes have ended. Chaperones normally accompany the students and Centro MundoLengua guides during cultural visits, as well as any excursions. In the event that a student becomes ill, Centro MundoLengua will always accompany him/her to the doctor. The chaperone will normally come along, for added support. In general, in case of any type of issue with students, Centro MundoLengua relies on the added advice and support of chaperones before taking action.
What are some of the incentives to travel?
Besides travelling for free, teachers can earn free courses and stipends. For teachers that travel with a group of at least 6 students, they receive the College Board AP® Teacher Workshop for free. For teachers that travel with at least 10 students, they receive an additional $800 stipend. Consult us for our conditions with teachers travelling with fewer than 6, or more than 10 students.
Will I have free time?
Absolutely. Given that our program is highly structured, you will find that you have a lot of free time to pursue outside interests, or to simply relax. Each group is assigned their own Centro MundoLengua coordinator who takes care of them. As well, there is always a program director onsite for added support. Some teachers use the time to study, investigate, get in shape, shop, catch up on summer reading, etc.
Do I need to buy flights for my group?
You are responsible for purchasing your own flights. It is very important to make sure all students have passports and secure your flights early. Madrid is one of the most popular destinations in the world. The longer you wait, the more you will probably have to pay for flights. That being said, we can help. We work with an agent that can book flights for groups of at least 10 individuals total (for airlines, a group needs to be at least 10). If you have less than 10 in your group, you can either ask a local travel agent, or simply book flights online. We will pick you up at the arrival airport in Spain. For Madrid, you should search for flights into the Adolfo Suárez airport.
How do you determine the Spanish level of my students?
Before arrival, you students will take an online placement exam. This will help us determine their level. In addition, they will supply us with the number of years of high school Spanish that they have completed. In any case, this course is intended for students who will be going into AP® the following year at school, or in some cases who have already completed AP® by the time of this course.
What are the classes like for my students?
Fundamentally, they are interactive and communicative. Students develop a close relationship with both their teacher, as well as classmates. Class sizes tend to be around 12 students (with a maximum of 15). Students have the opportunity to actually practice their Spanish by speaking a lot. They will study the language and culture at the same time. We will cover the principal themes of the AP® course, as students improve comprehensive abilities in writing, reading, speaking, and listening. Students will gain a definite advantage relative to their peers who have not completed this course, with a solid foundation for the coming year. Classes are not intended to give homework ortests, although there is typically a short exam and oral presentation at the end. Students complete the majority (if not all) of their work in class.
What are some examples of the activities?
Do your students have a love of art or history? How about a visit to the center of Madrid to discover its incredible monuments and its famous museums? Can they cook a Spanish dish? Do they want to try the best churros in the world? Are they well-versed in soccer and lovers of Real Madrid? Or perhaps they would like to spend the evening in the famous Warner Park in Madrid? In addition to the afternoon activities, you will be able to meet other students during our night program. This includes tapas nights, group dinners, movie nights, concerts, school dances, and other special events.
What will my students do on the weekend?
They will have the opportunity to travel Saturday as well as Sunday. We have day excursions (leaving during the morning and returning that evening). They will have the opportunity to travel to the medieval fortified city of Toledo, where they will be able to see buildings from all periods of history: Arabic, Gothic, Mudéjar, Renaissance, Baroque, etc. They will love its labyrinth of alleyways and its medieval architecture. They will also be able to visit the ancient Roman city of Segovia, with its impressive Roman aqueduct, along with its array of medieval monuments (the cathedral, the palace, etc.) and its impressive and varied cuisine.
What will housing be like for my students in residences?
They will live in a student residence in the center of Madrid. This is the best way to discover Madrid!
They will have everything that they need close by: study room, gym, computer lab, kitchen, and school.
In addition, they will meet many other international students. They will gain different perspectives and visions of the world, due to continued contact with students from all over the world, with different cultures, religions, and languages. They will make lifelong friendships!
They will eat authentic Spanish dishes in the residence, making this an excellent opportunity to try new homemade Spanish dishes. Laundry service is also available.
What will living with a host family be like?
Madrid, being the capital city of Spain, is larger than most other cities. We always try to house our students in the same vicinity. They should expect to be able to walk to school (no more than 30 minutes), or take the bus/metro. Students are responsible for buying transport passes within the city. We will cover this extensively in our on-site orientation. Living with a host family can be a great way to really immerse yourself with the culture and language of Spain. Our host families will provide all the meals for the students, which gives them a great opportunity to try typical homemade Spanish dishes. We can also deal with special diets, but we need to know this in advance. Families also wash any clothes for students. Our housing director is onsite every day, willing to help students with even the smallest of issues. Students develop close bonds with their families, and really love this aspect of the program. Living with a host family also offers them the opportunity to practice their Spanish in a real-life setting, outside of the classroom.
How much free time will my students have?
One thing that students love about this program is that they get the best of both worlds. They have the daily structure of their classes and activities, which allow them to meet new friends, along with some free time. Some students are more independent than others and relish this time to explore the city, meet the locals, play sports, go shopping, etc. Please see the section titled “A Typical Day”, but rest assured that they will have some free time every day for themselves.
Will my students have the opportunity to meet other Spanish and international students?
Of course! Your students will meet many other foreign and Spanish students in the residence, at the school, and on the streets.
How much supervision will there be?
All of the students enjoy 24/7 supervision from our multilingual team. Theirsafety is our first priority. The residence directors, host families, and all students have at their disposal a set of 24 hour emergency phone numbers. In addition, we are checking in with students at multiple times during the day, and all activities and excursions are 100% supervised by MundoLengua.
